Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead

Rose Hathaway is a teenage vampire protector. Which means she is entitled to protect a certain vampire assigned to her, which happens to be her best friend, a royal vampire princess named Lissa, yet to also kill certain other vampires. Confusing? I know. So basically the Moroi are good vampires, like Lissa, who use the four elements, to perform magic and they don't kill to get blood. But the Strigoi, are bad and ugly bloodsuckers who are pasty gray with fiery red eyes and are extremely powerful.
After going back to St. Vladimir Academy after a few year break (going into hiding) Lissa and Rose are the biggest talk around. Suddenly, weird stuff starts happening. Lissa's cat is murdered, frequent Strigoi attacks start happening everywhere, and no one is telling Rose why their creepy old teacher mysteriously disappeared. It seems someone bad is on the loose. That someone is in St. Vladimir Academy.

I thought this book was very interesting, and nothing like I thought it would be. While it is steered in the direction of a female audience, I think the bloody gore and action will have boys intrigued to try it out. I think a lot of people will relate to Rose's quirks and Lissa's genuine sweetness. This is a great series to check out.
