Gym Candy by: Carl Deuker
My favorite book I read over this school year was GYM Candy. Its a realistic fiction book because all the events that have happened in the book can happen in real life. The story is about a boy who is a really good running back. He is going to high school now and as a freshman he is trying to be the starting running back. At tryouts one senior was better than him. He was faster and stronger and the coach liked him. The senior was the running starting running back. He didn't start. He was their backup running back now. He wanted to start really bad and was looking for his chance to start. Then one day when their couch told them the the starting running back was caught drinking beer in school and would be suspended. Now finally, He had his chance to start. What he was waiting for all season. In there first playoff game they are down one at the five yard line. When they hand him the ball an forth down he gets tackled and the one yard line. It took everything he ha but he was outmuscled and was tackled. He never forgot about that one play.It stuck in his mind how he could have one the game, and he finally had a chance and blew it, even though he scored both of there touchdowns. He was a humble person. So in the summer he worked out everyday at his local GYM. Then his dad gets him really weird trainer. He talks to him about working , and is really buff and seem to never get tired. There was so thing really off about him. he always mentioned ways to get better. Then he slowly convinces him to take (Gym Candy) witch was really just steroids. as he took them got tons of energy, He worked out and never got tired. He was incredible. And at tryouts he blew away all the coaches with his incredible speed and strength. He was the best runningback in the league. but he was getting the terrible and gruesome side affect of steroids. It began to destroy his life. He was losing friends, his grades were low, but he was a great running back and he really didn't want to stop. And he could get a collage scholarship. From this, and even go to the NFL and become a better running back then his dad was.
The reason this book is my favorite book is because you don't have to like football to love this book. There is so much more to it. You read about the main characters back round, his dads back round as an NFL running back, how he was bullied, and his friends and what he liked to do in his free time. It is very well written and its very exciting. It shows you why you should not take steroids and what they do to you. Steroids slowly destroy his life. It only gives you the important highlight of the games. It wont talk about the other team making four incomplete passes or something. It also relatable with his school and friends and other things. IT makes you not want to put the book down. There is some gruesome parts of the book, and sad parts, so if you don't want that in your book then don't read this. But if you like football, and books that give a lot of information on the character then read it. My favorite part was when he won the game in the championship and everyone was cheering for him. That's why I loved this book.
