Touching Spirit Bear, by Ben Mikaelsen, is about Cole. He is arrogant, never sorry, and doesn't care. His dad is abusive and an alcoholic. His mom stands by and doesn't help him. He has anger management issues. One day he attacks a peer so violently that he must go to jail. He is given another option: go into the Alaskan wilderness and survive on his own for a year. Cole chooses the Alaskan wilderness. After a few days there, he is attacked by the mysterious Spirit Bear and almost dies. Will the attack change Cole's life for better, or for worse?
I was pleasantly surprised by this book. Despite what I had originally thought, it has meaningful messages. The changes Cole goes through are empowering. I would really recommend this book. You will come to enjoy it as much as I have.
