Looking For Alaska by John Green

Normally, my favorite books aren’t John Green books. However, I can make an exception for Looking For Alaska. The story begins with Miles, a thin, scrawny boy who basically feels he has no social life besides a few friends he barely knows. So, his parents enroll him in a boarding school in Alabama. When he gets there, he meets his new roommate, Chip Martin, also known as The Colonel(Miles gains a nickname that day, Pudge). He also meets Alaska Young and Takumi, who are friends of The Colonel. In a matter of a few weeks, Pudge disobeys his parents, and is drinking beer with a pack of cigarettes next to him off campus with his new friends. Although these people enjoy beer and smoking, they still act like high schoolers, and love to pull insane pranks. After pulling one of their greatest pranks yet(involving fireworks, fake progress reports, and the Dean of the school), Alaska, The Colonel, and Pudge decide that the best way to celebrate was to get drunk on campus, right in Alaska's room. Alaska, after getting a call from her boyfriend, quickly gets out of the room and asks The Colonel to help her get off campus without anyone noticing. She drove off, obviously upset, causing lots of confusion for Pudge and The Colonel.

In my opinion, this book is incredible. It’s amazingly written, develops an interesting plot, and still manages to be humorous even after a tragic event. Some parts in this story were written so descriptively that I could actually imagine exactly what was going on inside the characters’ heads. Also, this was one of the few books I read this year that I never really wanted to put down, because the storyline kept making me want to read more. Even though the characters have to go through such a devastating event, the story can still be lighthearted at times, or the complete opposite. I would definitely recommend this book for middle or high school teenagers. If you also enjoy realistic fiction, this is a book you might want to read. Overall, Looking For Alaska is a book I enjoyed reading, and if you’re interested, I suggest you read it, too.
