My story, Theodore Boone: Kid Lawyer by John Grisham, is a mixture of realistic fiction and mystery. On the realistic aspect, Theo is a teenage boy living in a modern day society with current U.S. laws and does things we would do as teenagers in the real world with nothing supernatural. On the mystery aspect, the main conflict in the story, a murder, is being solved through clues by different types of investigators such as Theo himself or by official judges/law enforcers.
When the conflict arises, the reader finds out that Theo is an avid enthusiast/learner of U.S. law and invites his government class to witness the trial of Pete Duffy who is accused of murdering his wife, Myra Duffy. As the story goes along, we learn Theo’s dedication to solving this murder once in for all. Pete Duffy has not been able to be proven guilty because of a lack of evidence but school and volunteering at a homeless shelter to tutor gets in Theo's way. However, later, a turning point appeared for Theo in his personal investigation because a person he mentors at the homeless shelter. Julio from El Salvador mentions that his cousin had witnessed the murder of Myra Duffy and can identify that Pete Duffy killed her but will be arrested if he speaks up since he is illegal in the United States. What happens next will change the course of not only Theo's life but his friends and family as well once a deadly secret has been shared...
Overall, I really enjoyed this book with its suspense, character development, and setting descriptions. With each page turn, a new problem is introduced whether it was going towards the solution of-of the murder or a separate more personal internal problem within a specific character. Speaking of characters, each one has their own quirky traits and makes it relatable to a seventh grader similar to you or me. For example, although Theo is intelligent, he is quiet in school and somewhat nosey. To end off, the settings for each event, the problem is described in detail down to the background, sky, and clothes of each character which enhances the overall story and your understanding. In conclusion, this book will keep you hooked because around every turn, there is a new plot twist even though in the beginning it starts out slow. By the end of the story, you will have driven driving down a highway of deep character development, setting, and suspense.
