This School year, I have received the pleasure of reading Blood Will Tell by April Henry. It is a Mystery Fiction book, and I know this because it includes made up characters and events all while portraying a story that includes a hideous murder case that desperately needs to be solved. This book is told from several points of view. The story is told by the three main characters-Nick, Alexis, and Ruby- and other minor ones such as a mysterious man called “k”. You see, Nick Walker, one of the main characters, is an average teen boy. He loves violent shooting games, doodling horrific comics in his notebook, and is a member of the Portland Search and Rescue Crew. Yet, in a matter of hours, all of that slips away when he becomes a prime suspect for the murder of a woman found in Portland Park. Somehow, Nick's DNA was transferred onto the victim's body and the fact that he admitted to passing the crime scene in his car the night of the murder doesn't make the situation any better. Can Nick and his two friends, Alexis and Ruby, clear his name before it’s too late? Or will the thought of “k”, the actual killer, being anywhere near the scene never dawn on the officers and detectives solving the case?
This book had me moving back and forth, trying to solve the mystery myself. It’s so intriguing and full of suspense! The fact that the point of view bounces from person to person as the story progresses keeps you on the edge of your seat and begging for more clues. Blood Will Tell is by far the best book I’ve read all year because of the fact that it introduces the murderer’s side of the story. Knowing how they reacted and what their motives are really gives a meaning to the phrase, “There’s always two sides to a story.” I would recommend this book to anyone that can tolerate or enjoy a gory plot or scene. I’d also like to recommend the story to 7th - 9th graders. I think that the events in the story are appropriate for the age group that is associated with those grades. In the end, I hope you read Blood Will Tell. And once you're done, be sure to read more frightening stories by April Henry!
