Uglies by Scott Westerfeld is a compelling dystopian novel about a society where you are born ugly. And by ugly it really means natural and untouched. After children reach a certain age, they go through a surgery to turn pretty. It involves the total transformation of yourself, with body sculpting and plastic surgeries. After that, you would be considered worthy to live in New Pretty Town, where life is one big party and beautiful people are constantly surrounding you. Tally has waited all her life to be pretty. She already had her new look planned out. Things change for Tally when she meets Shay, another Ugly girl, who wants to run away before the operation to a place called The Smoke where people can live like “Rusties” in the wilderness without any surgery. As the novel folds out, and Special Circumstances (their version of a government) convinces Tally into finding The Smoke for them. Things really shift when Tally learns new and shocking information about pretties and Special Circumstances that may change her mind. Tally is forced to choose what means more: friendship or beauty?
I really enjoyed this novel and it's relatable take on our society's standard of beauty. Their government is corrupt, and once again the main character of the novel decides to question authority and defy standards. It's the fast-moving story that has you rooting for the independent main character. You will not regret reading this book.
