The Giver is a fantasy classic ahead of its time with twists and turns around every corner. This novel stars, Jonas, a teenage boy living in a futuristic society that has been stripped of all pain, fear, war, and hatred. There is no individuality, since everyone looks and acts the same, and there is very little competition. Everyone is overly polite. The society has also eliminated your right to choose. At a certain age every member of the community is assigned a job based on his or her abilities and interests. At the beginning of the novel, Jonas is nervous about the upcoming ceremony, when he will be given his official Assignment as a new adult member of the community. He doesn't know where he fits in with everyone else. All Jonas knows is he has unusual powers. Sometimes objects “change” when he looks at them. He does not know it yet, but he, alone in his community, can notice flashes of color. At the Ceremony, Jonas is given the highly honored and rare job of Receiver of Memory. The Receiver is in charge of the community’s collective memory. Jonas receives the memories of the past, good and bad, from the current Receiver, a wise old man who tells Jonas to call him the Giver. Through the Giver, he discovers secrets about his society that are life-changing. Jonas' world is suddenly flipped and he doesn't know who to trust anymore, not even his family.
This book is an oldie-but-goody. You can't go wrong with this dystopian thriller. I really loved this book, and I think this has to be my favorite Lois Lowry. It has you questioning every character, and Jonas' character has you craning to find out why he is so special. You will not regret reading this book.
